Actual Air Conditioning Scams are Few, but Consumers Should Still Take Precautions
(especially in this economy!)

THE COLONY, TEXASMost consumers when faced with a broken air conditioner or heater just want it fixed at a fair price, however there are some companies who take delight in being dishonest and take it right to the bank.  For tips that consumers can use to protect themselves from air conditioning scams, look to Larry Everett, owner of Colony Air Conditioning & Heating--a contractor who has been in business over 30 years.

Every spring, television news programs conduct stings of air conditioning companies in an attempt to find scam artists,” says Everett. “In reality, scam artists are relatively uncommon within the industry and tend to be fly-by-night operations. However in this current economy, we're seeing more and more companies stoop to underhanded business operations.  If a company whom you are unfamiliar with calls you and pressures you to buy their "unbelieveably low-priced service", it is usually best to say no and be firm about it.  I recommend doing your homework first and checking out the company before accepting any telephone offer.  It seems that consumers who are looking for “lowest cost” repairs or who fall prey to aggressive, persuasive telemarketers are the most common victims."

Still, Everett says it is a good idea for all consumers to take precautions. “Look for established companies; those who have been around long enough to create a track record.  Usually 10 years or more is considered a minimum criteria” advises Everett. “Trust the recommendations of friends. Look for NATE-certified technicians. Ask for fixed prices before work begins, not open-ended quotes. And don't forget to take a look at the Better Business Bureau for company ratings. Every company has problems or misunderstandings from time to time but those companies listed with many complaints could indicate a troublesome trend.”

Everett says that one of the worst things a consumer can do is select a company, at random, from the yellow pages. “It’s like a lottery,” says Everett. “You might as well throw a dart at a dartboard.” Stating further, Everett mentions that “those companies who advertise “too good to be true” prices such as $19.95 tune-up or $19.95 service call, or even worse, free service call with repair, are companies to stay away from.  These offers are considered "loss leaders" solely intended to get the company in your door.

To help consumers identify competent, honest and qualified contractors, Colony Air Conditioning & Heating has established a guide for consumers to use when selecting a contractor. Included in the guide are checklists for service and a list of things consumers should beware.
